The Outer Banks empty out in winter, and that’s when its the most dreamy — dramatic skies pressing low and pale over empty beaches, the Atlantic gone steel-gray and restless, wild horses grazing slow through wind-bent sea oats, lighthouses cutting through early dusk, fog rolling off the sound to swallow the dunes whole. It’s a lonelier beauty than summer’s — quieter, colder, the kind of place that makes you want to walk for miles and say nothing at all.
