GHEI

Akwaaba!

In Humjibre, Ghana, I combined documentary photography and communications with community health work for the Ghana Health and Education Initiative (GHEI). My photographs captured both the organization’s programs and the life surrounding them—from children celebrating literacy milestones with dancing and alphabet games to students marching through town on Ghana’s Independence Day.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Photographs documenting GHEI’s work to support healthier pregnancies, safer births, and infant health in Humjibre, Ghana. Alongside my photography, I partnered with researchers on maternal mortality prevention strategies and helped train community health workers to support ongoing local health needs. This work brought together research, education, and community relationships to strengthen care for mothers and babies.

Maternal & Newborn Health

Access to water and everyday hygiene practices are essential to community health. This series documents GHEI’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives, which I supported through efforts to improve water access, strengthen sanitation, and prevent disease. Activities included handwashing stations, community training, and preparing student advocates to lead classroom WASH activities—helping children put what they learned into practice and share it with others.

Girls’ Education & Empowerment

A look at girls’ experiences of learning, participation, and leadership in Humjibre. These photographs place students at the center of the story, capturing the curiosity, friendships, and determination that shape their education. Within GHEI’s broader education work, this series explores the importance of opportunities for girls to build confidence and take an active role in their communities.

Community & Culture

A portrait of life in Humjibre beyond the boundaries of any single program. From students marching through town on Ghana’s Independence Day to children celebrating literacy milestones with dancing and alphabet games, these photographs capture moments of celebration, learning, and connection. Together, they offer a sense of the community in which GHEI’s work takes root.
